The pool villa is the typical Samui home. On the hills above Chaweng Noi, Bophut and Plai Laem it is typically a flat-roofed house stepped down the slope, with an infinity-edge pool and bedrooms on separate levels. In Maenam, Bang Por and Lipa Noi the ground is flatter and villas spread out in gardens, some directly on the beach. Taling Ngam looks southwest toward the Five Islands and the sunset. A careful buyer drives the access road in the rain, asks whether water is piped, pumped from a well or delivered by truck, and finds out whether the villa has been rented out for holidays and who managed it.
