Hillside and beachfront villas with open views of the Gulf of Thailand

Koh Samui is a hilly island in the Gulf of Thailand where most homes are villas rather than apartments. Hillside villas with sea views and beachfront houses are found around Bophut, Choeng Mon and Chaweng Noi, alongside a few small resort properties. It suits buyers who want privacy and a slower island pace.

Character

Koh Samui is a hilly island in the Gulf of Thailand, circled by a ring road of about fifty kilometers. Chaweng and Lamai on the east coast are busiest, Bophut and Maenam in the north calmer, the west and south still coconut country. Building rules keep everything low, so homes are mostly hillside pool villas, beach houses and small resort-style developments.

Price level

Samui is among the more expensive resort markets in Thailand, though a comparable sea-view villa often costs less than on Phuket. Beachfront land is scarcest and costliest, followed by hillside plots with sea views above Chaweng Noi, Choeng Mon and Bophut. Prices ease inland and along the quieter south and west coasts.

Who it suits

The island suits second-home owners, retirees and remote workers who want sea and hills near an airport. Families manage well in the northeast, near the international schools. It suits less those who need a city: shopping is modest, specialist medical care means Bangkok, and October to December is wet and quiet. Everyone needs a car or scooter.

Travel times

The airport lies in the northeast, about ten minutes by car from Chaweng and Bophut and about fifty from Taling Ngam. Bangkok is just over an hour by air; car ferries from Don Sak take about ninety minutes. Chaweng to Lamai is about twenty minutes. Private hospitals are in Chaweng and Bophut, international schools mainly in the northeast.

Questions and answers

Who will I meet in Thailand?

You meet one of our brokers in Thailand. The same broker shows you the homes, negotiates for you and follows the contract through to handover.

Which languages can I get help in?

Personal service is given in English and Thai. You can read the website in other languages, but our brokers in Thailand speak and write English and Thai.

Can foreigners own a home in Thailand?

Yes, with limits. A foreigner can own a condominium unit freehold as long as foreign ownership in the building stays within the legal quota. A foreigner cannot normally own land, so a house or villa is usually held on a long lease. The guide sets out the options.
