Most homes sold on Koh Samui are villas, and most of those stand on the slopes, not on the sand. The northeastern hills, from Chaweng Noi around to Choeng Mon and Plai Laem, carry modern pool villas looking out over the Gulf. Maenam and Bang Por have larger, flatter plots among coconut palms. Lamai and the south coast toward Laem Set and Thong Krut are quieter and less built. Condominium buildings are few and low, because local rules cap height at about twelve meters. Land, shophouses and small resorts make up the rest. The road up, the water supply and the drive to the airport deserve as much attention as the view.
